We Love Jam Studios

Project Overview

We Love Jam Studios is a recording and audio production space, built to double as an intimate venue for live performance. It came with two real challenges: the building is a heritage-listed former wool store, and it had no windows and no natural light at all.

The heritage listing asked me to tread lightly. Rather than build into the old structure, I suspended the studios and soundproof rooms within its existing framework, so the historic bones are left largely untouched and a striking contrast opens up between old and new.

The absence of daylight became the second design driver. I answered it with light itself, shaping the space into clearly defined public and private zones lit to mimic an indoor-outdoor world. The shared spaces are bright and open, conjuring the feeling of daylight streaming in, while the private rooms are wrapped in softer, more intimate lighting: pockets of evening warmth deep inside the studio. What began as two constraints became the character of the place.
