There are many surprises to be found behind the facades of Paddington's terrace houses. So it was with real delight that, when a client asked me to refresh his terrace interior, I discovered it had originally been renovated by the architect Anthony Gill: a house that had been meticulously designed and beautifully crafted.
I saw my role as one part in the ongoing evolution of the building. The new interiors were designed to highlight the original design and expand upon its initial concept, so there would be a seamless connection between what came before and the new materials and finishes.
I developed a neutral but warm palette that responds to the existing American oak joinery and brass fittings. Linear strip lighting references the strong geometric lines of the house. The result is a harmonious evolution: new and old in dialogue.
